The group was founded in 1998 and is composed of hypertensive, diabetic women; some with panic disorder due to social and police violence in the Maré communities. They all knew how to do crochet and began to make crochet dresses that could be made by all at the same time. They are part of the solidarity economy and fair trade movement; and today, they sell their crochet art at the Rio de Janeiro Circuit of Solidarity Economy fairs, guaranteeing a monthly income to each one.

Mulheres ao Vento

ac - ARTE E CULTURA

Women in the Wind is a dance project that traverses Afro-Brazilianism, linked to black feminism, with the aim of disseminating the African matrix culture through art, mainly the performing arts, combining the discussion of transversal themes pertinent to the promotion of diversity, gender equality and respect. It works with women from Maré through crosscutting themes, and the diffusion and artistic training in popular territories through a theoretical-practical methodology that values the exchange of knowledge. Women in the Wind was conceived and carried out by the partnership between Andreza Jorge and Simonne Alves, both graduated in Dance from UFRJ.

This workshop brings women together to provoke and discuss what it actually means "being a woman" . It is a political experience that refers us to the methodologies of the ancient knowledge exchange gatherings that stimulate the connection with the sacred feminine. The purpose of this experience is that women begin to perceive themselves as part of a network in which it is possible to associate and mobilize other women, by using speech as an instrument to enable struggles for rights and for another "reality".

There are many ways to silence women's voice. They are subtle forms present in everyday life and, at the same time, sophisticated in the way society structures itself. Reflecting and revealing how colonialism, patriarchy, and oppression are mechanisms that forge the silencing of women is urgent. Many movements in this sense have been taking place in response to such a context. They are expressions present in many medias, from art, communication and new narratives address in key issues for more just society, such as feminism and antiracist struggle.

We live in a world where there is a clear separation of tasks considered appropriate for men and women. It is a fact that, in many situations, the work done by men is better paid and valued. This marks the gender inequality in the field of professional activity and poses challenges for women to the urgency of fighting for the end of the sexual division of labour and for the valorization and dignity of human labor without the usual hierarchies.

The connection of women with the energy of the earth, of nature, is part of our walk as a species. In this process, women are fundamental leaders in the defense of rights, in the construction of collective processes, formulation and materialization of struggles for the defense of nature and its use in a rational and sensitive way, in its condition of common good. It could not be different when we think of agroecology, an alternative model of sustainable rural development that respects the diversity of local livelihoods and ways, such as organic agriculture, permaculture, and other practices. There is much that we learn in this collective conversation. And we will have women with beautiful energies to deal with our relationship with nature and how to produce respecting it as a source of life.

rc - RODAS DE CONVERSAS

The discussion of masculinity for gender equality has become an important way of thinking about the world in which men and women share common and equal grounds, from the understanding that it is not possible to accept any kind of hierarchy and oppression between genders. WOW Founder Jude Kelly opens a conversation on the fundamental participation of men in the construction of a society that overcomes the historical sexism and patriarchy in the relations between men and women.

Within the immersive performance created by the English artist Selina Thompson, we are invited in small groups to elaborate answers to questions as delicate as difficult: What is the long-term psychological impact of white supremacy on black people? Why do people believe that racism will end on its own over time? The performance was conceived as part of a research on black identity in the UK that led the artist to redo the slave trade route between the European country Ghana and Jamaica on a freighter. Based in Leeds, England, Selina Thompson has a playful, participatory and intimate character that takes a look at issues of identity and their reflections in our bodies, lives and spaces.

Women in MAR's collection | Guided visitng

ac - ARTE E CULTURA

The Rio Art Museum, under the management of the Odeon Institute opens to the public, on 16th November the exhibition "Women in the MAR Collection". In a dialogue with the Women of the World Festival, of which MAR is a strategic partner, the exhibit presents a selection of works by historical and contemporary Brazilian and foreign artists that are part of the museum collection. The curatorship is signed by the content team and, for the first time in the history of the museum, was carried out through a collective process that involved women from all sectors of the institution. About 30 employees and collaborators - among security guards, receptionists, producers, administrative assistants, lawyers, journalists, designers - participated in gatherings where they exchanged life experiences and talked over two months about the feminine universe and the multiple representations of women in art, in cultural spaces, in the family and in society as a whole. "Women in the MAR Collection" is divided into six significant sections: Portrait/Representation, Political Body, Transverse Geography, City and Landscape, Abstraction and Poetics. It includes works by artists like Beatriz Milhazes, Tarsila do Amaral, Tomie Ohtake, Giselle Beiguelman, Güler Ates and Marie Nivouliès de Pierrefort.
